The project site was an approximately 100-acre area of the Sweetwater River in the San Diego National Wildlife Refuge (Refuge) managed by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). Fourth grade students first visited an upland area adjacent to the Sweetwater River and then went down to a riparian zone along the banks of the river. A total of 210 fourth grade students (6 classes) participated in the program. Each class was visited at its school by the EDI Education Coordinator to discuss science and ecosystem issues, and identify how upper and lower watershed areas are related. Subsequently, students took two science service–learning field trips to the project site where habitat improvement activities were incorporated into their hands-on science curriculum.
